Preventing and Reducing Risk Behaviors
Every two years the California Department of Education (CDE) requires school districts to conduct the California Healthy Kids Survey to assist schools in preventing youth health-risk behaviors and to promote positive youth development, resilience, and well-being.
Two surveys are completed: elementary students in Grade 5 and secondary students in grades 7, 9 and 11 are surveyed to yield the developmentally appropriate data schools need to guide the implementation of health, prevention, and youth development programs.
A thorough understanding of the scope and nature of the youth behaviors is essential to guide decision-making in developing effective prevention, health, and youth development programs. It is also essential for raising public awareness and fostering program support. The program is intended to send a positive message to students, schools, and communities about the importance of healthy behaviors and environments that foster well-being. The overall intent of the California Healthy Kids Survey is to help school communities understand the many positive traits of their schools and students and to encourage them to seek ways to help students in need to become more competent.
